Practical to save space, bunk beds can optimize space and easily develop a small room. Which model to choose, advantages, disadvantages and rules of security … Advice to not be mistaken.
Suitable for small spaces, bunk beds save space without compromising on comfort. This type of structure is ideal for children who share a room, at home or at the grandparents’ house during the holidays.
If you do not avoid the hassle of who will get the top bed, please be aware that the bunk bed is not suitable for children under 6 years old. Toddlers will sleep on the bottom mattress. You will probably not escape the chatter and other laughter once the lights off. Some will appreciate these moments of complicity, others will regret a lack of privacy, but for everyone to feel comfortable, there are some things not to neglect.
Check points with a bunk bed
Security is paramount with bunk beds
Security is of course something you can not compromise on. Check that the access to the bed, especially the top one, is secure, and that the building meets European standards. The ladder (or staircase) must be solid and secure. Children often like to climb to play, it is better to ensure that it will not fall out. Remember to check the quality of the slats, especially for the top bunk. Also make sure that the bunk bed is equipped with a fence on both sides to avoid accidents beasts: it may happen to forget that we are high and fall from the bed in the middle of the night or rising the morning. Prevention is better than cure.
Stability of bunk beds
This is another important point. A lack of stability can generate a feeling of insecurity and fragility of the structure. It can also annoy sleep and, obviously, make noise with each action.
The right distance between the two beds, and between the top bed and the ceiling
There must be a space of at least 60 cm between the top mattress and the ceiling. Take the dimensions and pick their location, especially in a sub-slope room. The space must also be sufficient between the bottom bed and the top bed. It must indeed be able to sit without banging your head.
Bunk beds: which model to choose?
There are several kinds of structures:
- the classic bunk beds with two beds one above the other or arranged at right angles. Some even give a third sleeping choice with a mattress concealed in a drawer under the bottom bed;
- the separable bunk beds that make it possible to make two separate beds when the children grow up and that a need of intimacy is felt;
- a full over full bunk bed with a mattress 140 cm, ideal for free space on the ground and install below a desk or a relaxation area. This type of structure is suitable for teenagers looking for a certain freedom, or small apartments in which the least square centimeter account;
- bunk beds with wooden or metal structure? Wood is a strong and durable material that offers excellent stability. It is well suited to small structures for children. Choose solid wood panels, such as fir trees for example. Metal, also strong but lighter, is a good choice.
